Long Rodアユ

Basic Structure of the Rig
- Ayu Rod: Extremely long rods of 8–9 meters are used to allow the ayu (decoy fish) to swim over a wide area.
- Line System: From the rod tip downward, the system consists of the tenjo line, the main underwater line (nylon, fluorocarbon, or composite metal), visual markers for detecting bites, and the harness around the ayu’s nose (hanakan setup).
- Hanakan & Saka Hook: The hanakan is passed through the ayu’s nose to secure the decoy fish. The saka hook is inserted near the anal fin to stabilize the position of the ikari hook used to hook wild ayu.
- Ikari Hook (Treble‑style Ayu Hook): A cluster of 3 or 4 hooks arranged like an anchor. The tippet length is adjusted so the hook extends 1–2cm behind the decoy’s tail.
- Additional Gear: A floating keeper (tomobune) to hold live ayu, an otorikan for transporting decoy fish, an ayu landing net, and specialized belts, tights, and footwear.
Fishing Procedure
- Preparation: Most rivers require a fishing permit. Purchase the permit and the decoy ayu at a local ayu shop.
- Finding a Spot: Look for “hami‑ato”—bite marks where ayu have grazed algae from rocks. Stones with sharp outlines or polished, colorful surfaces are prime indicators.
- Setting the Decoy: Cool your hands in water to avoid weakening the decoy fish. Pass the hanakan through the nose and insert the saka hook near the anal fin.
- Approach (Sending Out the Decoy): Start by sending the decoy into gentle currents nearby.
Free‑swimming Method — Keep the rod upright and give slack so the decoy swims freely; effective in slower currents.
Dragging Method — Keep the rod low and maintain slight tension to control the decoy; used in stronger currents. - Bite & “Hikinuki”: When a wild ayu attacks, the marker jumps or a shock is felt. Bend the rod deeply to absorb the fight, then lift the fish from the water and “fly” it into your net using the hikinuki technique.
- Rotation Cycle: Use the freshly caught wild ayu as the next decoy. Repeating this cycle increases catch efficiency and builds momentum throughout the session.
