Basic Structure of the Rig

• Rod: A 6–7 ft rod is easy to handle and commonly used. Catfish‑specific rods are designed with the power to fight and lift large catfish, featuring a flexible tip and a strong butt section.
• Reel: A sturdy baitcasting reel capable of holding thick line is standard.
• Line: PE line in 4–6号 (about 50–80lb) is typically used straight through. Its buoyancy makes it ideal for topwater presentations and improves snag‑recovery rates.
• Lures: Topwater plugs that appeal through sound and vibration are the go‑to choice.
• Essential Gear: A fish grip to protect the fish’s mouth and your hands, pliers for hook removal, and a landing net are indispensable for safe handling.

Fishing Procedure

1. Spot Selection:
   Inlets — Catfish often wait beneath flowing water where prey drifts in, making these prime spots.
   Shade — Under bridges, around drainage pipes, or beneath overhanging vegetation where catfish rest during the day.
   Areas with Change — Eddies, seams, or depth transitions are also productive.
2. Approach:
   Catfish may be right at your feet or grouped together. Avoid spooking them—make the first cast land softly, and if there’s no reaction, create more noise on the second cast to draw attention.
3. Action (Luring):
   Steady Retrieve — Reel at a constant speed to produce sound and wake from the lure.
   Dog Walk (Tight Spot Work) — Keep the lure in one place with short side‑to‑side movements to create a feeding pause.
   Sound Variation — Not only loud splashes but also subtle rattling sounds can be effective during low‑activity daytime periods.
4. Bite & Hook‑set:
   Catfish strike explosively at the surface with a “whump,” but do not set the hook immediately. Wait until you feel solid weight on the rod, then set the hook firmly.
5. Landing & Care:
   When bringing the fish in, mind the rod angle to avoid tearing the mouth. Finish with a net or grip for a secure landing.
   Catfish are delicate—avoid placing them on dry ground, handle gently, and release them promptly.
