Basic Structure of the Rig
- Tackle: A 2500–3000 size spinning reel paired with a 2.1–2.6m (7–8 ft) eging rod is standard. Shorter rods are easier to handle, while longer rods help keep the line close to the water surface in windy conditions.
- Main Line: Use PE line. Its low stretch allows rod movements to transfer directly to the egi and helps detect distant bites. Thickness is typically 0.6–0.8号.
- Leader: Attach fluorocarbon (2–3号 / 8–12lb) to the PE line for abrasion resistance.
- Snap & Egi: A metal snap at the end of the leader allows quick lure changes without cutting the line.
Egi Size — 2.5–3.0号 for autumn when squid are small and abundant; 3.5–4.0号 for targeting large spring squid. - Equipment: Polarized sunglasses for eye protection and spotting squid, a landing net or gaff for large squid, and a life jacket for safety.
Fishing Procedure
- Casting & Line Mending: After casting, adjust the rod to settle the line on the water and align yourself with the egi. This reduces wind interference and ensures proper sinking.
- Bottom Contact: Let the egi sink to the seabed. When the line stops moving or slackens on the surface, it indicates bottom contact.
- Action (Jerking): Snap the rod upward to make the egi dart left, right, or upward.
Tip — Start the jerk with slight line slack to make the egi jump cleanly. - Fall (Sinking): The most critical phase in eging.
Free Fall — Let the line go slack so the egi sinks naturally; ideal for slow, thorough searching.
Tension Fall — Keep slight tension on the line; the egi sinks while drifting toward you, and bites are easier to detect. - Detecting Bites & Hook‑set: If the slack line suddenly tightens or you feel a “thump,” the squid has grabbed the egi. Lift the rod to set the hook.
- Landing: Since squid hooks have no barbs, maintain steady tension while reeling. For large squid, use a landing net or gaff from behind to avoid tearing the flesh.
