Basic Structure of the Rig

  • Yumizuno (Main Lure): A crescent‑shaped artificial lure about 4cm long. The line is threaded through the inner hole, and an “figure‑eight knot” is tied on the outside to create a stopper. Pearl white—resembling whitebait—is the standard color, while pink works well in murky water and blue in clear water.
  • Rod: Use long, strong rods such as surf rods, long‑casting rock rods, or shore‑jigging rods to cast the weight (such as a casting sinker) and the long leader attached to the yumizuno.
  • Reel & Main Line: A compact 5000‑size reel paired with PE line around 1.5号 is standard.
  • Casting Weight (Device): Jet‑type casting sinkers are common, cost‑effective, and ideal for long‑distance casting. When you want to create surface splashing action, use a floating type called a “mouse.”
  • Leader: Use fluorocarbon around 6号, with length adjusted depending on rod length.
  • Swivel: Since the yumizuno spins to attract fish, connecting it through a rolling swivel is essential to prevent line twist.

Fishing Procedure

  1. Preparation: If the leader has coil memory, stretch it straight by hand. This helps the yumizuno move more naturally.
  2. Casting: After checking safety around you, cast as far as possible. Just before the lure hits the water, perform “thumbing” by pressing the spool with your finger. This ensures the yumizuno lands before the weight, dramatically reducing tangles during flight and splashdown.
  3. Adjusting the Range:
Surface Layer — Start reeling immediately after splashdown. Effective when fish are chasing whitebait near the surface.
Mid‑depth / Bottom — If there’s no response, let it sink for 10–15 seconds before retrieving.
  4. Retrieve (Steady Retrieve): Reel at a constant speed—roughly the pace of someone jogging. No need to move the rod dramatically; keep it at a steady angle.
  5. Bite and Landing: When a fish bites, you’ll feel a solid “thump.” No hook‑set is needed—just keep reeling and the fish will hook itself.
  6. Maintenance: Because the yumizuno rotates, line twist can accumulate. Every few casts, run the line through your fingers or lightly shake the rod to remove twist and prevent trouble.
