Basic Structure of the Rig

  • Hook Positioning: The defining feature of this rig is that the hook is positioned above the sinker.
  • Leader Length: The distance between the hook and sinker is typically around 20cm, but can be adjusted between 15–40cm depending on conditions.
  • Hook Selection: In snag‑prone areas, use an offset hook that allows the hook point to be hidden inside the worm.
  • Setup Tip: Fix the hook so that the hook point always faces upward. This improves snag‑resistance and increases hook‑up rates.
  • Sinker Shape: Stick‑type sinkers are ideal for slipping through rocks, while round sinkers offer better bottom sensitivity and help reduce unwanted movement.

Fishing Procedure

  1. Casting and Bottom Contact: Since the sinker descends first, it reaches the bottom quickly. Pay close attention to line slack to detect the exact moment the sinker touches bottom.
  2. Basic Action (Dragging & Steady Retrieve): Slowly pull the rig horizontally while maintaining bottom contact. The goal is to keep the worm slightly above the bottom as it swims.
  3. Working Around Structure: When the rig bumps into structure and stops, that’s your biggest chance. Stop reeling and add small rod‑tip shakes (“shaking”) or simply let it sit. The suspended worm becomes an easy target for fish.
  4. Detecting Bites: Because the hook is positioned above the sinker, bites are transmitted very directly through the line, making them easy to detect.
  5. Hook‑set: Set the hook immediately when you feel a bite. For long‑distance casts, reel in to load the rod first, then set the hook firmly to ensure penetration into the fish’s hard mouth.
