Basic Structure of the Rig

  • Lures:
Vibration Lures — Metal vibration baits shaped like small fish, producing strong vibrations and designed for long‑distance casting.
Blade Jigs — Metal jigs equipped with a spinning blade at the tail, generating strong flashing and vibration simply by reeling.
  • Rod: Long rods around 10–11 feet are standard. Medium (M) to Medium‑Heavy (MH) power rods are ideal, offering long‑distance casting with minimal effort while maintaining both sensitivity and strength. Dedicated surf rods or seabass rods are recommended.
  • Reel & Main Line: Use a 4000–5000 size spinning reel with PE line from 0.8–1.5号.
  • Leader: Connect about 1.5m of fluorocarbon leader to the main line using a strong knot such as the FG knot, and attach a snap for easy lure changes.
  • Safety Gear (Essential): Because surf fishing involves sudden waves, wearing a life jacket, waders, hat, and polarized sunglasses is strongly recommended.

Fishing Procedure

  1. Casting and Bottom Detection: Cast far and let the lure sink to the bottom. Confirming bottom contact helps you understand the depth and structure of the area.
  2. Setting the Range (Depth): Retrieving 50–60cm above the bottom is effective for flounder. For seabass or surface‑oriented fish, shorten the countdown after splashdown and start reeling sooner.
  3. Action (Luring):
Steady Retrieve — Maintain a constant speed. For vibration lures, reel at a speed where the “buzzing” vibration feels light and consistent.
Fast Retrieve & Stop‑and‑Go — Fast retrieves work well for active fish like Spanish mackerel (sagoshi). Occasionally pausing the retrieve creates a feeding opportunity.
Lift & Fall — Lift the rod to make the lure jump, then let it fall. Many bites occur during the fall, so watch the line closely.
