Basic Structure of the Rig

• Lure (Jighead & Worm): Choose weights such as 14g, 21g, 27g, 28g, or 30g depending on depth, wind, and current.
  Worm Shapes — Standard shad tails, highly appealing grubs (curly tails), or bite‑sized 3‑inch worms are commonly used.
  Blade Models — Worms with a blade on the tail allow you to retrieve slowly while maintaining a consistent depth.
• Rod: Long rods around 10–11 feet are standard. Medium (M) to Medium‑Heavy (MH) power rods are ideal, offering long‑distance casting with minimal effort while maintaining both sensitivity and strength. Dedicated surf rods or seabass rods are recommended.
• Reel & Main Line: Use a 4000–5000 size spinning reel with PE line from 0.8–1.5号.
• Leader: Connect about 1.5m of fluorocarbon leader to the main line using a strong knot such as the FG knot, and attach a snap for easy lure changes.
• Safety Gear (Essential): Because surf fishing involves sudden waves, wearing a life jacket, waders, hat, and polarized sunglasses is strongly recommended.

Fishing Procedure

1. Spot Selection: Target areas with structural changes such as rip currents, the step‑down near the surf line (front break), deeper channels called “yobu,” or gaps in sandbars.
2. Action:
   Stop & Go — Reel 3–5 turns, stop, let the lure hit bottom, and repeat. Bites often occur during the pause or right when the lure starts moving again.
   Steady Retrieve (Slow Retrieve) — With blade worms, slowly retrieve just above the bottom.
   Lift & Fall / Bottom Bump — Hop the rod tip lightly or tap the bottom to attract fish.
3. Bite and Landing: Bites often occur during the fall or at the start of the retrieve. When landing the fish near the surf line, time your landing with the waves to avoid losing the fish.
4. Tips: Flounder (hirame) tend to strike lures passing above them, while flathead (magochi) prefer prey crawling along the bottom such as crabs. Adjust lift height and bottom‑contact time depending on the target species.
