Basic Structure of the Rig

  • Rod: Choose a rod that can handle jigs around 10g. Eging rods are considered the “best match” due to their versatility. Seabass rods, shore‑jigging rods, and even light‑game rods (for ajing or mebaring) can also be used for lighter jigs.
  • Line: Use PE line suited to your tackle (generally 0.6–1.5号 depending on purpose), connected to a firm fluorocarbon leader of about 2–8号, 1–1.5m in length.
  • Metal Jig: Select jigs from 7–15g micro jigs to around 40g shore‑jigging jigs depending on target species and water depth.

Fishing Procedure

  1. Casting and Bottom Contact: Cast far and let the jig sink until it hits the bottom. On windy days, lightly pressing the line with your finger (“thumbing”) helps control line release and makes bottom detection easier.
  2. Action (Luring):
Steady Retrieve — Simply reeling at a constant speed allows blades or sabiki feathers to attract fish.
One‑Pitch Jerk — Repeatedly “jerk and reel” to make the jig dart upward and appeal strongly.
Lift & Fall — Lift the rod high to raise the jig, then let it fall again. This is highly effective even right at your feet along the seawall.
  3. Feeding Opportunity During the Fall:
The best chance to get a bite is during the fall.
As the jig sinks, the sabiki hooks spread away from the main line, making them easier for fish to bite.
  4. Detecting Bites: Watch for the line suddenly stopping during the fall, or conversely, running out quickly—both indicate a bite. During the retrieve, pay attention to sharp impacts or rod‑shaking vibrations.
  5. Landing: Double‑hits are common, with fish biting both the jig and the sabiki. When hooked into large fish or multiple fish at once, avoid lifting them directly—use a landing net for safety.
