Basic Structure of the Rig

• Rod: In addition to rods specifically designed for cutlassfish tenya fishing, eging rods, seabass rods, and light shore‑jigging rods can also be used.
• Main Line and Leader: Use PE line around 0.8–1号, connected to a fluorocarbon leader of about 3–5号.
• Fighting Leader: To prevent cut‑offs from the sharp teeth of cutlassfish, attach an additional 50–60cm of thick fluorocarbon (around 70lb) or a wire leader to the end of the leader.
• Tenya and Bait: Use a “tenya,” a lead head with a fixed hook. Choose weights from 5g to 30g depending on conditions. Secure bait such as kibinago or sardines by wrapping them tightly with thin wire.
• Glow Stick (Chemiluminescent Light): Attach a glow stick 40–50cm above the tenya on the leader to improve visibility and attract fish.

Fishing Procedure

1. Setting the Bait: Place kibinago or other bait onto the tenya shaft and wrap wire tightly from the head toward the tail. A firm wrap helps the bait stay in place and makes it easier for the cutlassfish’s teeth to catch, increasing bite detection.
2. Casting and Searching the Depth (Range): After casting, count down to control the sinking depth. During daylight, fish tend to stay near the bottom, but as it gets darker, they rise toward the surface. Adjust the depth to find where the fish are reacting.
3. Action: The basic method is a slow retrieve, but adding pauses or giving small twitches with the rod tip followed by a fall (drop) can create feeding opportunities and trigger strikes.
4. Bite and Hook‑set: Bites may feel like a sharp jolt or sudden loss of weight. When you detect a bite, lift the rod to set the hook. A two‑stage hook‑set—a light hook‑set followed by a stronger one—is also effective to ensure the hook penetrates.
5. Landing: Reel at a steady pace and lift the fish out once it reaches your feet.
