Basic Structure of the Rig

• Tackle: A long‑distance surf rod rated 3–5号 and around 4–5m in length is suitable. A 3000–5000 size spinning reel is recommended.
• Line (Main Line & Leader): Use 6–8号 nylon as the main line and 5–10号 fluorocarbon as the leader, depending on the target species and conditions.
• Float: Use an inline float (6–10号) that is resistant to trouble even in strong winds.
• Additional Components: Combine float stoppers, stopper beads, and sinkers with cushion rubber. Cushion rubber is recommended to prevent sudden strikes from causing line breaks.

Fishing Procedure

1. Setting the Depth (Tana): Adjust the float stopper according to the target species. When targeting blue‑runner species or sea bass, starting at 3–5m (2–3 hiro) is standard.
2. Hooking the Bait & Casting: Quickly hook live bait such as horse mackerel. Cast gently in a smooth arc to avoid weakening or losing the bait.
3. Drifting the Rig: After casting, keep the bail open or leave some slack so the bait can swim freely. If the line is too tight, the fish may feel resistance when taking the bait.
4. Bite and Hook‑set: Even if the float sinks, do not set the hook immediately. Wait until the fish fully takes the bait and begins to run. Remove slack from the line, then lift the rod firmly to set the hook.
5. Fighting the Fish: Since the fish are strong fighters, keep the rod bent and maintain steady pressure. Finish by landing the fish with a landing net (tamo).
