Basic Structure of the Rig

• Tackle: A 4–5m surf rod rated 3–4号 or a shore‑jigging rod is suitable. Use a 3000–5000 size spinning reel spooled with 6–8号 nylon or PE line of 2号 or heavier.
• Basic Components: Attach a leader to the main line using a parent‑child swivel with branch lines (edas), and tie a weight at the bottom.
• Sliding Dropper Rig: Some commercial rigs use a sliding dropper system that allows the baitfish to swim freely, helping keep the bait lively for longer.
• Hook Setup: Single‑hook rigs are common, but when targeting species like flounder that are poor at striking, rigs with an additional stinger hook (such as a treble hook) are often used to improve hook‑up rates.

Fishing Procedure

1. Preparing and Hooking the Bait: Use live bait such as horse mackerel or sardines.
   “Nose‑hooking” keeps the bait lively and swimming naturally, increasing its appeal.
   “Back‑hooking” prevents the bait from tearing off and allows it to swim in a stable posture.
2. Dropping the Rig: Gently lower the bait near your feet or into the targeted area. Avoid forceful casting, as it can weaken the bait or cause it to fall off the hook.
3. Waiting (Drag Adjustment): Once the weight reaches the bottom, remove slack from the line and place the rod on a holder. To prevent a large fish from pulling the rod into the water, keep the drag loose or attach a safety rope.
4. Bite and Hook‑set: When a predator approaches, the baitfish will panic, causing small pre‑bites on the rod tip. After the rod is pulled strongly or the fish begins to run and peel line, tighten the drag and perform a firm hook‑set.
5. Fighting and Landing: Since the target species are powerful fighters, use the rod’s bend to maintain steady tension while reeling them in. Always finish by landing the fish with a landing net (tamo).
