Basic Structure of the Rig

• Rod and Reel: Use a long‑distance surf rod rated 4–5号 and around 5.3–6.0m in length. For reels, choose a large spinning reel that can spool about 200m of 6号 nylon, or a dual‑axis reel with excellent casting performance.
• Basket and Float: Use a large long‑distance float around 12号 along with a chum basket (komase‑kago) matched to its weight.
• Main Line and Leader: The main line is typically 6号 nylon. The leader is chosen based on the target species and conditions—usually around 5号 and over 4m in length.
• Cushion Rubber: Installed between the basket and the leader, it absorbs the powerful runs of blue‑runner species, preventing line breaks and hook‑outs.

Fishing Procedure

1. Preparing the Bait: Thaw frozen krill (okiami) by soaking it in seawater. This prevents discoloration and keeps it fresh.
2. Setting the Depth (Tana): Adjust the float stopper according to the depth where the target fish are swimming. When targeting fish near the bottom, raise the stopper so the hook sits slightly above the seabed.
3. Hooking the Bait & Filling the Basket: Attach the hook bait (tsuke‑esa) by shaping it along the hook curve and hiding the hook point to avoid spooking fish. Fill the basket about 80% with chum and place the hook bait inside before closing the lid to prevent it from flying off during casting.
4. Casting & Sinking: After ensuring safety around you, cast the rig. After it lands, feed out line until the float stands upright, ensuring the rig sinks to the correct depth.
5. Luring & Detecting Bites: Occasionally lift the rod to move the bait—this “誘い” action can be effective. A bite is indicated when the float disappears underwater or moves unnaturally.
6. Landing the Fish: Once hooked, maintain steady tension and reel the fish in.
