Basic Structure of the Rig

  • Tackle: Use a strong lure rod, long-distance surf rod, or casting rod paired with a 3000–4000 size reel. A setup with PE line (1号 or thicker) and a shock leader is ideal for achieving long casting distance.
  • Basket and Float: Attach a rocket basket or dedicated chum basket for holding bait, along with a foam float to keep the rig suspended.
  • Sabiki Hooks: Connect a Sabiki rig below the basket. Choose hook sizes based on the size of the horse mackerel—small hooks (3–5号) for standard sizes, and larger hooks (7–8号) for bigger fish.
  • Weight: Attach an 8–15号 (or heavier) weight at the bottom of the rig. This allows the float to pull the rig upward from the seabed, making it stand vertically.
  • Detecting Bites: In addition to watching the rod tip, you can attach a bell or tip light to detect bites visually and audibly.

Fishing Procedure

  1. Baiting and Casting: Fill the basket with ami-ebi and cast toward your target area.
  2. Confirming Bottom Contact: When the rig reaches the seabed, the line will slacken—use this as your cue.

  3. Releasing Chum: After reaching the bottom, lift the rod firmly once to release chum from the basket, then keep the line taut and wait for a bite.
  4. Waiting for a Bite: When a fish bites, the rod tip will tremble or the bell will ring.
  5. Retrieving and Landing: Since horse mackerel have delicate mouths, reel in slowly and steadily to avoid losing the fish.
