Basic Structure of the Rig
- Rod and Reel: A long-distance surf rod around 4–5 meters or a casting rod is suitable. Use a 2500–3000 size spinning reel spooled with approximately 3号 nylon line.
- Float and Float Stopper: By moving the rubber float stopper up or down on the main line, you can freely adjust the depth (tana) at which the rig sinks. This is the most important factor that affects your catch rate.
- Basket Placement: The upper basket (rocket basket) is ideal for long-distance casting and allows you to deliver chum precisely to deeper layers. The lower basket naturally releases chum as it sinks, letting you efficiently search a wide area from the surface to mid-depth.
- Sabiki Rig: Sabiki rigs designed for casting are short (1–1.5m) and easy to handle. Some are built with a thicker main line to withstand larger fish.
- Weight: Attached to the bottom of the rig. When targeting horse mackerel, using a lighter weight (around 3号) allows the rig to drift more naturally in the water, reducing the chance of the hook tearing out of the fish’s mouth.
Fishing Procedure
- Setup: Tie the main line from the reel to the connection point of the rig (loop or snap).
- Setting the Depth: Adjust the float stopper according to the water depth and the layer where fish are present.
- Casting: Fill the basket with ami-ebi, check your surroundings for safety, then swing the rod back and cast gently.
- Luring: Once the rig reaches the bottom and the float stands upright, lift and lower the rod to release chum from the basket. This helps blend the hooks into the cloud of chum.
- Bite and Landing: When the float sinks or trembles, it’s a bite. Since horse mackerel have delicate mouths, reel in slowly and steadily without rushing.
